ALOHA CUP and Mariana's Trench

This past weekend we hosted the 2nd annual ALOHA CUP and we had the pleasure of hosting Mariana's Trench. Saturday was an amazing day full of sunshine, smiles and laughs on the race course and teenage girls screaming in delight of seeing Mariana's Trench playing live for an outdoor concert.

The Aloha Cup is a fun race for all ages skiers and boarders. The course has banked turns, jumps, rollers and palm tree's. We had about 130 racers come on out to this event. Some racers were as young as 2 years old. There were loads of great prizes for everyone including a brand new pair of Ellan skis to give-a-way.

Mariana's Trench is a young punk/emo style band from Vancouver. There top single"Fallen" has been at the top of the Much Music charts several weeks in a row. They are very humble down to earth guys with a large following of young teenage girls. They played a live outdoor concert for their fans in the late afternoon while the sun beaded down on the crowd.

All in all it was an amazing weekend with loads of family fun and great music. Thank you to everyone who came out this weekend and don't put your ski gear away just yet we are wide open until May 6th.

MARMOT BASIN SHATTERS ALL TIME SNOWFALL RECORD
25 cm of new snow brings total snowfall to 560 cm this season

Jasper, AB
March 30, 2012 –

Marmot Basin shattered its all-time snowfall record today when a whopping 25 cm of
snow fell overnight. The total snowfall for the season now sits at 560 cm (18 ft.) breaking the previous record of 542 cm set in 1998. And, with five weeks left in the season, Marmot is sure to receive even more snow before May 6th, the last day of the season. “People will be talking about this winter for a long time” says Brian Rode, Marmot’s VP of Marketing. “I have run out of superlatives to describe the snow conditions. In my 34 years at Marmot I have never seen anything like this. It is just absolutely jaw- dropping, eye popping incredible how much snow we have and how good the conditions are”, added Rode.

Ski Patrol are busy digging out fences while the avalanche control team works furiously to get the runs open for powder hungry skiers and snowboarders who are flocking to the mountain this morning. Even though the Jasper locals will surely take advantage of the powder today, Rode says there will be lots left for those heading up this weekend. “One of the great features of Marmot is that even days after a big snowfall, fresh tracks can be found on many of the runs. We have a lot of terrain and it takes quite some time for everything to get tracked up so there will be lots of powder left over for those heading to Jasper over the next several days”, explains Rode.

So how will Marmot Basin be celebrating their record snowfall season? By spending as much time as possible on the slopes of course. What better way to pay tribute to a season that will go down in the record books as the best ever in history!

Myofascial Cupping for the Winter Sports Enthusiast

Anna Faris RMT. BScKin

Whether you are pulling out your skis, snowboard, skates or runners this winter season you will likely experience muscle tension and soreness in your legs due to the physical demands of your chosen activity. Not only are you putting your muscular strength and stamina to the test, but also you must factor in the large stability component required to tackle the slippy terrain of ice and snow. As a result of this exercise, the leg muscles will face the effects of dehydration whereby the connective and muscular tissues start to "stick" to each other. Envision a web-like connective tissue which surrounds your muscles almost like a plastic
wrap the full length of your body. This flexible web is known as myofascia. When that web is pulled tight it results in decreased range of motion, decreased blood flow to the muscle and altered biomechanics which may put you at an increased risk for injury. The impaired ability of the muscles to glide smoothly across each other leads to ineffective muscle movement and force production. The restriction of movement diminishes blood flow to the muscles.
This circulation is required to both deliver oxygen and nutrients necessary for muscle contraction as well as remove waste products created during muscle
movement. Myofascial Cupping is a great technique for releasing both muscular and fascial restrictions. It is a modified version of the traditional Chinese flame cupping. The main difference being that the myofascial cupping targets the musculoskeletal system rather than the meridian systems. A pressure gun is used to create a negative pressure between the skin and the cup, thereby suctioning the myofascia and superficial muscle layer. This effectively draws the tissues apart to allow for the muscles to breath and move freely. Cupping can be integrated into any massage session on various parts of the body. I have found myofascial cupping to be especially effective on persistently tight iliotibial bands (ITBs). ITBs are the thickened connective tissue that runs down the outer leg from the hip to the knee which when tightened can cause knee pain.
Proper balancing of the muscles decreases the risk of injury of the joints and muscles, as well as increases the potential to perform. The suction of the cupping restores optimal gliding to “stuck” muscles and is a wonderful way to increase blood flow to nourish and replenish stagnant muscles. This will reduce inflammation and improve recovery time, so you can get back outdoors sooner!
